Objective
10 Describe events, using the vocabulary of probability: best, worst; probable, improbable; always, more likely, less likely, equally likely, never.
Problem
You want to spin a 3 to win the game. Which spinner will give you your best chance?

Either a 2 or 3 would win the game. Which spinner should you choose?

Manipulative
Materials: die face cutouts (or blank six-sided die).

  • Your task is to create a different four-sided die or a six-sided die which would provide the outcomes as described below:

  • probably roll a 3.
  • impossible to roll a 5.
  • always roll a 2.
  • more likely to roll a 3 than a 4.
  • less likely to roll a 1 than a 6.
  • equally likely to roll a 2 or a 3.
  • never roll a 5.
  • Conduct an experiment to test how well your dice provides the described outcomes.
  • Question: How many different six-sided dice can be made (using the cutout squares given) whereby you are equally likely to get a 1, 2 or 4?
Game
Materials: 4 numbered bags, color tiles, pencil, paper.

  • Set up the game:

  • in bag 1 place 5 red, 3 yellow and 2 blue tiles
  • in bag 2 place 5 yellow, 3 blue and 2 green tiles
  • in bag 3 place 5 blue, 3 green and 2 red tiles
  • in bag 4 place 5 green, 3 red and 2 yellow tiles
  • On your turn you may draw one tile from any bag. If you do not need that color tile, but your partner does, pass it over. If neither of you need that tile, return it to the bag from which it was taken. The winner is the first to collect three tiles of each of the four colors.
  • Hint: You may find it helpful to keep a list of what was in each bag and what has been taken from each bag.
Adaptation:
  • Mix up the bags so that you do not know which bag is which at the start of the game. Now you will need to keep track of what is drawn from each in order to predict where you should draw.
