Objective
12 Conduct probability experiments to demonstrate that results are not influenced by such factors as the age, experiences or skills of the participant.
Problem
Both Team A and Team B have 3 players. Each player gets to roll a die for his/her team, summing the values rolled. If the teams use the same die, and the teams are of the same size, which team will win? Why?
Manipulative
  Materials: paper bag, color tiles

  • Place 5 red and 5 yellow tiles in a bag.

  • Work with a partner.

  • The oldest person gets to go first. Take turns drawing tiles. Draw until the bag is empty.

  • How many red tiles did the oldest person get?

  • Repeat this activity several times. Keep track of how many red tiles each person draws each time.

  • Do each of you draw the same number of red tiles each time? Why not?

  • Repeat the same activity, but pair a boy with a girl. Do the players get the same number of red tiles each time? Why or why not?
Game
  Materials: regular deck of cards.

  • Shuffle the cards well before playing this game.

  • This is a game for 2 or more players.

  • Each player takes a turn flipping over the top card on the deck. If you turn over a "Jack" you drop out of the game. The last person in the game wins.

  • If you run out of cards before a winner is found, simply shuffle the cards to make a new deck, and continue playing as before.
  • Play several rounds.

  • Does the same player win each time? Why?
