Is there an equation to find what percent of 0 is 1? |
2020-03-09 |
|
Asher pose la question : Question: Is there an equation to find what percent of 0 is 1.
I remember learning quite a long time ago that the answer inst 0 and it isn't infinity. I'm pretty sure it was something like %=0 approaching infinity or %=1 approaching infinity. And I know it depends what value you assign the numbers i.e. dollars or temperature. Furthermore, is asking "what percent 1 dollar is of 0 dollars" the same question as "what percent profit do you make from selling something worth 0 dollars for 1 dollar."

Pre tax and post tax percentages |
2018-05-22 |
|
Tom pose la question : Hi,
I work in a clothes shop which can also do mail-orders. My Head Office
has sent a report with which we can check the records we keep in store
tally with those at HO.
According to that report we have taken £2578.25 in orders, excluding VAT (20%),
which would therefore be £3093.91 including VAT (2578.25+20%=3093.91).
According to my records, we have taken £3179.32 including VAT, which would be
£2543.45 excluding VAT (3179.32-20%=2543.45).
Why is it that the difference between the VAT inclusive figures (3179.32-3093.91) is +£85.41, but
the difference between the VAT exclusive figures (2543.45-2578.26) is -£34.81?
Now, I can see from the report that 1 order has not been recorded by HO, and I
know that our average order value is around £30, so the -£34.81 makes sense.
But surely both figures should be a minus, regardless of whether they include VAT?
I'm sure there is an obvious answer, but I just cannot see it! Any help would be gratefully
received.
Thanks,
Tom Penny Nom lui répond. |

A sales tax of 7% |

Kenneth pose la question : Hello:
If a sales tax of 7% is placed on every $1.00 of merchandise for sale, is it correct to indicate
the tax as 7%/ per $1.00 or 7%/$1.00? If the calculation is expressed as 7%/$1.00 X $5.00,
the tax is not $0.35 but 0.35. Is a tax rate of 7% incorrectly represented as 7%/$1.00

The definition of percent ( % ) |

Kenneth pose la question : Hello:
I saw this definition online from the Free Dictionary (The Free Dictionary.com) regarding the definition of percent (%):
"Noun 1. a percent sign - a sign (`%') used to indicate that the number preceding it should be understood as a proportion multiplied by 100."
What is this "proportion" multiplied by 100?
When I think of a proportion, I think of a/b = c/d. How can a number preceding the percent sign be understood as a proportion X 100?

Lucy pose la question : Hi,
The question is:
Samoa 23%
Brazil 41%
Sri Lanka 52%
Senegal 39%
Armenia 37%
Croatia 20%
Why is the following statement true for the data above: More than half of the people said they were interested in Sri Lanka. The reason I don't understand the problem is that because the percentages add up to be greater than 100%, that means that the 500 people(as stated in the question) who participated in the survey got to pick more than once. Therefore, it is not 52% out of 100% anymore.

Lucy pose la question : Hi,
For the following question:
Ten pounds of mixed nuts contain 50 percent peanuts. How many pounds of peanuts must be added so that the final mixture has 60 percent peanuts?(A) 2.5 (B) 5 (C) 6 (D) 10 (E) 12.5,
my math book gives my the following explanation: Try choice (C): 6 pounds of peanuts. The original 10-pound mixture contained 50 percent peanuts, or 5 pounds. Now you have 11 pounds of peanuts in a 16-pound mixture, more than 60 percent. This result automatically eliminates choices (D) and (E) as well. Why would this result automatically rule out D and E? Sui pose la question : Hi,
I would like to ask your favor for reviewing the following percent change in sales calculation, did I do it right? I am surprise/wondering with the big amount of the percentage result. Your assistance and guidance would be highly appreciate.
Sales for month of August 2000: 5,198,750 IDR
Sales for month of October 2000: 62,291,700 IDR
Difference = 62,291,700 IDR - 5,198,750 IDR = 57,092,950 IDR
Percentage change = 57,092,950 IDR : 5,198,750 IDR = 10.98 X 100 = 1,098%
Sales for month of February 2008: 1,664,800 IDR
Sales for month of August 2008: 161,715,307 IDR
Difference = 161,715,307 IDR - 1,664,800 IDR = 160,050,507 IDR
Percentage change = 160,050,507 : 1,664,800 = 96.14 X 100 = 9,614%

Markup and discount to get a sale price |
2013-03-02 |
|
Warren pose la question :
If you are an ardent shopper you will be aware of the discount (% decrease) marketing strategy to produce the sale price. I began to wonder just how much mark-up (% increase) was added initially to an item in order to deliver the discounted sale price.
It was simple to construct a formula to convert one to the other.
For example a 30% (mark down) decrease in price required a 42.86% (mark up) to increase the price initially to Tag price. However when I started apply the formulae to a number of circumstances I noticed some very interesting circumstances associated with this relationship
For example a 99.999999% decrease is numerically equal to a 9,999,999,925% increase (huge ratio difference) while conversely a 0.1% decrease is numerically equal to a 0.10010010% increase (Infinitesimally small ratio difference) so the patterns appears logarithmic not linear.
However what really caught my attention was this pattern
See http://www.ozsmart.com/doc/percentage.htm
My questions is why does the decline in the ratio of increases in required mark up (%) price peak at 50 and 51% precisely and then expand again as the percentage move higher
Any explanation would be appreciated Harley Weston lui répond. |

Percentiles |
2012-10-17 |
|
Kenneth pose la question : Question from Kenneth:
Hello:
What is a common calculation used to determine percentiles?
For example, five employees have the following salaries:
Office worker 1 - $25,000
Office worker 2 - $27,000
Office worker 3 - $30,000
Office worker 4 - $32,000
Office worker 5 - $35,000
What is the percentile rank of office worker 3 who earns $30,000?
Here's what I know: Add the number of salaries. Total: 5
Add the smallest number of salaries less than $30,000. There are two.
Now, divide 2 by 5 and multiply by 100. 2/5 * 100 = 40
I think the office worker making $30,000 is in the 40th percentile.
and I'm not sure what this ranking indicates.

Jay pose la question : When calculating percentage growth, why is (y-x)/x the same as

increase? So, (10-5)/5 = 1 (i.e. 100% increase), AND, (10/5)-1 = 1

A truncated cone: the central angle |
2012-07-17 |
|
Tom pose la question : I have researched several sites, including this one and am fairly confident I can do the calculations required to produce the two radii and the slant height for a truncated cone.
I a somewhat confused by the central angle. Some sites indicate that it should never exceed 180 degrees while others do not. Different examples on your site seem to use this in two different ways in constructing a truncated cone.
Sometimes the angle seems to indicate the section to be removed, while in other examples the angle seems to indicate the section to be saved. Since the two angles will always total 360 I am confused about how to use the info to
calculate the minimum rectangle required to contain the pattern. I'm guessing that in some cases I may need to use the chord or sagitta to determine the desired height and width of the material. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

A Performance Appraisal |
2012-03-06 |
|
Reuel pose la question : Hello:
I'm looking for an answer to this one:
If I have 428 staff for Performance Appraisal the year 2011 my
suggestions for rating their rankings would be:
5% can be no. 1 which would mean 21 employees
15% can be no. 2 which would mean 64 employees
60% can be no. 3 which would mean 257 employees
15% can be no. 4 which would mean 64 employees
5% can be no. 5 which would mean 21 employees
However, what I have received is this:
5% are no. 1 which would mean 20 employees
22 % are no. 2 which would mean 94 employees
60% are no. 3 which would mean 270 employees
15% are no. 4 which would mean 41 employees
5% are no. 5 which would mean 3 employees
Now my question is how do I find the percentage difference between both
the scenarios of should be versus reality? I don't think it is normal subtraction, is it? any help would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
Reuel Harley Weston lui répond. |

Reuel pose la question : Hello:
I'm looking for an answer to this one:
If I have 428 staff for Performance Appraisal the year 2011 my
suggestions for rating their rankings would be:
5% can be no. 1 which would mean 21 employees
15% can be no. 2 which would mean 64 employees
60% can be no. 3 which would mean 257 employees
15% can be no. 4 which would mean 64 employees
5% can be no. 5 which would mean 21 employees
However, what I have received is this:
5% are no. 1 which would mean 20 employees
22 % are no. 2 which would mean 94 employees
60% are no. 3 which would mean 270 employees
15% are no. 4 which would mean 41 employees
5% are no. 5 which would mean 3 employees
Now my question is how do I find the percentage difference between both
the scenarios of should be versus reality? I don't think it is normal subtraction, is it? any help would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
Reuel Harley Weston lui répond. |

Kenneth pose la question : Hello:
It is correct to express 0.5% as 5 tenths of one percent.
Is it also correct to express 0.5% as 5 tenths of one-hundred percentage points or 5 tenths of one percentage point?
I think it would be 5 tenths of one percentage point because 5 tenths of one-hundred percentage points would be 50 percentage points, but I'm not sure.
I thank you for your reply. Penny Nom lui répond. |

Commission |
2010-04-24 |
|
TAHIR pose la question : I want to pre-determine the amount of commission on sale of my product which will be the amount that I shall have to pay .
For example, the price is $ 600and commission 5% .
1) I calculate commission on 600 @ 5% = $ 30
When added $ 600 the retail price = $ 630
2) But on $ 630, 5% commission = $ 31.50
So we make a loss of $ 1.50 .
3) Again if we add this $ 1.50 to $ 630 the price = 631.50
But the commission when calculated does not tally
and we make a loss of $ 0.075.
Please let me know how to determine the commission beforehand so that it matches our accounts. Penny Nom lui répond. |

Chris pose la question : I am trying to figure out how much more volume is needed to reach a certain %. For example if I sell 15,182 of unit X out of 43,241 total units. Then I know that unit X is 35.1% of units sold. However, I need to get unit X to be 46.3% of total units sold. I need to figure how many more units of X I need to sell to reach this %. Of course if I sell more units of X then this increases the denominator. Can you please help? Thank you for your time. Penny Nom lui répond. |

A car loan |
2009-05-06 |
|
Cindy pose la question : A person takes out a car loan in the amount of $11,170.00 @ 4.5% interest. The person makes 17 payments of $500.00, then for the 18th payment (this person 'finds' some $) and pays off the whole thing. How much was their last (18th) payment? How much overall did they pay in principle? and interest?
The person who made the initial loan then takes $11,156.25 and places it into a High Interest Savings Account @ 2.25% annually on Nov 18, 2003. How much is now in the High Interest Savings Account if no futher funds have been added to the account and no withdrawls have been made?
Thanks for your help with this. I have been trying on and off for 3 years to figure this out.

Express 13 mills as a decimal part of $1.00. |
2009-03-13 |
|
Kenneth pose la question : Hello:
I read the following in an old business mathematics textbook:
"Express 13 mills as a decimal part of $1.00."
I can determine the answer as follows: There are 1000 mills in or per
$1.00. 13 mills divided by 1000 mills/$1.00 equals $0.013, the answer.
My question is as follows: What does "...as a decimal part of $1.00"
indicate or represent from "Express 13 mills as a decimal part of
$1.00."?
Is (a decimal part of $1.00) any decimal less than $1.00 with the decimal having a dollar sign
before it.

What is the pre GST price? |
2008-12-05 |
|
Chris pose la question : I've been looking at a few answers to the question of before and after GST price calculation.
the suggestion have been :: multiply the pre GST price by 1.10 to get the
price and reverse to get a pre GST price.
But how do you calculate the pre GST price from an existing retail price?
For example if you take an item that is $150.00 and multiply it by 0.10
you get $15.00 as the GST add on. Apparently giving you $135.00 as the
pre GST price. However if you then multiply $135.00 by 1.10 you get the
$148.50 as the total.
So the question is how does one calculate the real pre GST price from
an existing retail price?

pencils worth $1.00 is 6% X $1.00 is $0.06 or 6 cents plus $1.00 for
a total of $1.06.
1. If the tax is 6%/$1.00, why doesn't the dollar sign as a unit cancel
after the multiplication?
Isn't it 6%/$1.00 X $1.00 or whatever the dollar amount is?

More on a percentage question |
2007-08-23 |
|
Dee pose la question : In a previous question, you answered:
"What percentage of $34.51 is $10.71?
I translate this English statement into a mathematical statement (equation) using the following
"what" is the unknown, call it x
"percent" is per-one-hundred, that is over 100
"of" is multiplication
"is" is the verb, which in an equation is the equal sign
Thus the English statement above becomes
x/100 $34.51 = $10.71
Solving for x yields
x = 31.03
Hence the gross profit is 31% of your selling price."
How did you solve for 'x' Penny Nom lui répond. |

Percentage calculations |

Lorrinn pose la question : I process gifts for a nonprofit agency. For some gifts I calculate administrative fees. I understand calculating a straight percentage of a gift (i.e. 10% of $100.00 = $10.00). That's a fee "off the top". What I would like to better understand is the theory or the "mathematical reasoning" behind calculating percentages "on the inside". For example, to calculate 10% "on the inside" of $100.00, I use the following formula: $100.00/1.10*10.0%. The answer here is $9.09. Sandra pose la question :
I have two numbers (1530 and 1315). How do I calculate the percentage difference.
For example: I have one loader that lifts 1530 lbs. and another loader that lifts 1315 lbs. I know the difference is 215 lbs. How much greater lift capacity does the loader that lifts 1530 lbs. have than the loader that lifts 1315 lbs.?
The formula that I used was:
1530 - 1315 = 215

Markups and discounts |
2006-01-21 |
|
Dan pose la question : I'm trying to increase my pricing by 30 percent. I'm doing something completely wrong. If my price is $150.00 and I increase the price by 30 percent. I would take 150 times .30 and that equals 45. I would then take 45 plus 150 and that would give me 195. My problem is now 195 is my list price. If I turn around and give my customer a 30 percent discount off the 195 the price ends up being 136.50. Which is less than the 150 that I started with. I'm confusing myself and have totally lost confidence in what I'm doing and how . Can you help me? Penny Nom lui répond. |

Andrea pose la question : I am trying to find the centriod of a triangle. I have been given the three vertices of the triangle: A (-25, -20), B (-5, -40), and C (15, 30). I believe I calculated the correct midpoints: AB(E) (-5, 5), BC(D) (5, -5), and AC(F) (-15, -30). When I graphed these points I came up with the solution (-5, -10), but I can't seem to write the answer out (equations of the lines, etc) correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Percentage markup |
2006-01-10 |
|
Ian pose la question :
I have a markup question for you. I work for a painting company, specifically I estimate cost and sell painting projects. Within our office, we've had some discussion on how markup should be calculated for materials that we include in our prices. These are the two scenarios that we've come up with.
1. Mark up as a percentage of the cost: Cost = $ 10.00 X 15% Markup = $ 1.50. $ 1.50 + $ 10.00 equals $ 11.50 as a sale price.
2. Selling Price = Cost / (1-the desired profit margin). This would equal to $ 10.00 / (1-.15) = $ 11.76 roughly.
If you have any information on whether one is more correct and why, I would appreciate this. I want to make sure that I am marking things up correctly.

Profit margin |

Chet pose la question :
My salesman calculates a customers profit margin by dividing what the customer paid by what he sells for, then subtracting that answer from 1. For example a customer sells a product for $15. He bought it for $10. 15/10=.66 Subtract that from 1 and get a profit % of 33% Here's my question: If I want to figure what a reseller will sell a product for if he wants 40% margin(by the technique above), what formula do I use? Let's say I want to sell a product for 8.50, and I want the reseller to make 40% Penny Nom lui répond. |

A 40% markup |
2003-06-12 |
|
Nick pose la question : I am attempting to determine the Retail price of an item that costs me 11.00. Our company wants to sell it at a markup of 40%. I calculated this two ways, first the way I thought it should be done. Second, the way the calculator does it (and my accountant).
- Cost + Cost*(percentmarkup/100)= retail price 11.00 + 11.00*.40 = retail price 11.00 + 4.40 = 15.40 retail price
- Using the calculators Mark Up key the answer is 18.33. Or 7.33 more than the cost or 67%.
I am confused by this Mark Up key and how it calculates. I used a cost of $10.00 and marked it up 50%. I thought it should equal $15.00 but the calculator says $20.00? This seems to be 100% markup, yes? Can you explain the difference between the way I did it and the way a Business calculator does it? Penny Nom lui répond. |

In otherwords can you take the % of difference when the numbers you are comparing are %'s???? Can you also take an average of an average? For example, average number of payments received in October was 25.00%, average number of payments received November was 50.00%, and the average number of payments received in December was 15.00%. Do you average (25.00%, 50.00% and 15.00%) or do you have to go back to the numbers that calculated the averages. For example, October 25.00% was based on 25 payments being received out of a possible 100. So instead of taking the average of the averages, do you take the average payments and the average customers over the 3 months and calculate the average??? Harley Weston lui répond. |

Example: N=338, but responses to questions asked in survey I'm studying equal of 24.3, 9.8, 43.8, DON'T add up to 100%. I'm assuming that some people surveyed out of the 338 didn't bother responding, but is there another problem related to proportion or ratio being used, but improperly labeled on graph?. Note at bottom of table says: "number in parenthesis are numbers of cases" and 338 was in parentheses. I'm lost. Penny Nom lui répond. |

Michael Weinberg pose la question : I am the Laboratory information system supervisor in a hospital. Our computer system calculates the change of specific results to monitor a patient's status. Donna Hall pose la question : A skeptic gives the following argument to show that there must be a flaw in the central limit theorem: We know that the sum of independent Poisson random variables follows a Poisson distribution with aparameter that is the sum of the parameters of the summands. In particular, if n independentPoisson random variables, each with parameter 1/n, are summed, the sum has a Poisson distributionwith parameter 1. The central limit theoren says the sum tends to a normal distribution, butPoisson distribution with parameter 1 is not normal. What do you think of this argument? Neal Madras lui répond. |
